PANICUM virgatum

Switchgrass is an erect, coarse, warm-season perennial grass, growing to 1-1.5 m tall. Roots: Switchgrass has long, scaly rhizomes with fibrous roots. Roots can grow to 3 m in depth. Stems/Sheath: Sheaths are round, glabrous and red-purplish in color. No evergreen leaves are present at the base. Leaves: Blades are flat, elongate, 6-12mm wide, and distinctly veined. A triangular patch of hairs is present on the upper leaf surface at the base of leaf blade.
